Project Objectives

Problem

VESA's DisplayPort Alternate Mode VIF Generator tool was causing confusion among engineers responsible for validating and documenting device compliance. The tool required precise inputs, but there was little guidance on how to correctly complete each step. As a result, engineers often produced inconsistent or incorrect VIF files, leading to imprecision in the team with time and delays in the validation process.

My Process

Learning the Tool

To understand the challenges engineers were facing, I began by using the VIF Generator myself with no prior knowledge — approaching the tool as a first-time user allowed me to identify unclear steps, missing guidance, and points where context was not easy to parse.

Discovering the Workflow

As I explored and experimented, I documented each step of the process and captured screenshots along the way. I then validated my understanding against the feedback of the workflow and ensured that a critical step was understood.

Structuring with Engineers

I collaborated closely with the engineering team, sharing early drafts and ensuring that no step was given without sufficient context. I worked to make each data field clearly labeled, confirm individual accuracy, and identify edge cases the tool could encounter on input. Each step was paired with a corresponding screenshot to reinforce its context and help users navigate the interface with confidence.

Key Decisions

Learning the Tool

By immersing myself in the tool before writing a single word, I was able to write from a user's perspective — identifying what was confusing, what context was missing, and where assumptions were being made.
